In a growing world of AI with instant images and answers, it can be increasingly difficult to understand the value an interior designer or architect brings to the planning process.
Why use traditional tools like 3D modelling and renders when you can generate an image in seconds?
In this article, I will guide you through the distinct benefits of a professionally planned space, when it is a good idea to use AI, and what pitfalls to avoid.
When considering updating your space, either interiors or exteriors, it can be helpful to ask AI software to help visualise what directions to take. You receive instant imagery, which can spark some great ideas.
However, there are many elements that still require support from professionals once project planning begins.
Where AI currently lacks is in the intricate details.
No matter how many prompts or extra information you provide, vital design elements are often forgotten, while others are crammed into a space where they would never fit in reality.
If you are only just starting your re-design planning, AI is a great way to generate initial concepts.
Although there are benefits such as time reduction and instant imagery, it is crucial not to trust this tool with an entire project. A full re-design remains a highly physical work in the real world, something AI does not quite grasp yet.
As you may have experienced when asking questions through ChatGPT or Gemini, oddities alter perceptions entirely. This is especially true for specific structural projects:
To take everything a step further, AI designs cannot yet offer a comprehensive 360º ‘visit’ of a model that allows you to understand the true flow of the space and the interaction between different rooms.
When I create a professional 3D model, I offer my clients a real-time walkthrough.
We virtually walk around the space and tweak small elements to fully match their preferences.
This is always based on a complete understanding and observation of the true construction of the walls and textures present in your property.
Once the structural model is perfectly finished, we create the rendered images.
These show the accurate interaction of the lighting from the lamps inside with the natural Portuguese sunlight coming through the windows.
They are the beautiful visual at the end that helps builders and designers understand if everything truly works together aesthetically.
When these are completed, it is the perfect moment to move towards cohesive interior decoration. Moreover, an interior designer can present real material samples for you to touch and visualise in person, bringing the whole vision another step closer to reality.
Do not leave your home renovation to guesswork or algorithms.
